The 5 Most Popular Perfumes Of All Time

The 5 Most Popular Perfumes Of All Time
With several classic scents ranging from floral to Oriental notes, a woman can define her personality by the perfume she wears. A fragrance can evoke femininity, sensuality, exoticism – or all of the above. Haute couture has long established certain fragrances’ appeal in the hearts and minds of women worldwide.
Though perfumes have been in existence since ancient times in Egypt, the Roman empire and Persia, the modern perfume as we know it today was launched at the tail end of the 19th century. Combining a variety of smells from largely natural sources like barks, flowers, fruits and woods, an entire industry of perfumes has been created that generates about $31 billion a year worldwide. Global Industry Analysts Inc., which publishes off-the-shelf market research for over 9,500 companies from 36 nations all over the globe, reports that the international perfume and fragrance market will be worth about U.S. $45.6 billion by 2018.
Anyone who’s anyone is launching a perfume these days. Not only are cosmetic companies and fashion designers introducing them, but celebrities too. Lately, Sarah Jessica Parker‘s “Lovely” became the most popular celebrity-endorsed perfume in the U.K., according to The Daily Mail Online. Though a few celebrity perfumes have landed on lists of top sellers, they can’t seem to compete with the established popularity of classic perfumes introduced by fashion houses and cosmetic companies.
While new and novel perfumes are released every season, the following five classic scents have withstood the test of time, the fluctuating markets and widely varying trends. These fragrances not only revolutionized women’s (and men’s) love affair with perfumes, but they have deeply ingrained historical significance. Between the perfumes’ subtle but distinctive notes (that is, the level of scents unveiled as the applied perfume fades), their uniqueness at the time of launch, clever marketing campaigns and even an occasional controversy, these perfumes have become the world’s most popular and best-selling fragrances.

5. L’Air Du Temps by Nina Ricci

This feminine scent, launched in 1948, includes the top notes of carnation and gardenia, middle notes of centifolia rose and grasse jasmine and base notes of Mysore sandalwood and iris. Robert Ricci, Nina Ricci’s son, wanted to expand his mother’s fashion house into the perfume business and the inimitable L’Air Du Temps was a result of that effort. The scent has since expanded into other areas of toiletries including shower gels, body lotions, deodorant sprays, talcum powders and body soaps.

4. Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

For almost 40 years, Opium by Yves Saint Laurent has attracted a lot of sales and a little controversy. Compounded by perfumer Jean-Louis Sieuzac and launched in 1977, the perfume’s first controversy revolved around its name, which infuriated the Chinese population in America. They demanded that Laurent – who thought up the name himself – apologize for turning a blind eye to Chinese history and Chinese-American concerns and find an alternative name. Ironically, the controversy greatly increased sales and made Opium a best seller. Since then, it has done astoundingly well in France and overseas.
Another controversy erupted in 2000 in Great Britain, when a sexually suggestive ad campaign for Opium perfume featured model Sophie Dahl nude with the exception of high heels and one hand on a breast. The perfume weathered these storms, and Opium continues to entice women with its spicy sensuality. The perfume’s top notes include mandarin orange, coriander and pepper; middle notes that include jasmine and rose; and base notes that include myrrh, cedarwood and sandalwood.

3. Shalimar by Guerlain

Source: www.media.douglas.de
Source: www.media.douglas.de
Shalimar is history’s first Oriental-scented perfume. Jacques Guerlain introduced the fragrance in 1925. He’s said to have been influenced by the romance between Princess Mumtaz Mahal and her husband, Indian Emperor Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan dedicated the Garden of Shalimar to and built the Taj Mahal for his wife. The garden’s basins inspired the design of the bottle’s fragrance. The bottle took first place at the 1925 Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition.
Its notes – including bergamot, amber, iris and vanilla – blend to infuse a sensuality into Shalimar that earned its reputation as the Forbidden Fragrance. “Wearing Shalimar means letting your senses take over,” Guerlain once said, according to the House of Guerlain website.
There is some conflict regarding the origin of the word “Shalimar”. According to the House of Guerlain website, Shalimar is Sanskrit for “temple of love”. However, a January 2012 article from The International Tribune says the word has Arabic roots, and that it often translates as “abode of light” or “moonlight”.

2. Joy by Jean Patou

Source: www.jeanpatouperfumes.blogspot.com
Source: www.jeanpatouperfumes.blogspot.com
Compounded by Henri Almeras, French couturier Jean Patou launched Joy when the world was in the grips of an economic depression. In 1930, Patou dispatched a bottle of Joy to each of his 250 best clients in the United States. The fragrance proved it was able to withstand what could have been a tsunami of financial turmoil for the fashion house. Joy would go on to become a strong rival to the number one best-selling fragrance of all time. It has gained recognition as one of the most popular and successful fragrances in the world today.
Described as the world’s most expensive perfume, Joy has 10,600 jasmine flowers and 336 roses; its scent brings “a light avalanche of flowers from the east and west”, the House of Patou website says. House of Patou has launched several fragrances since Joy, but Joy has remained its signature scent.

1. Chanel No. 5 by Chanel

Source: www.mag.nobleandroyal.com
Source: www.mag.nobleandroyal.com
No other perfume has achieved the iconic status of Chanel No. 5. Coco Chanel launched the perfume in 1921 because she wanted a ‘woman’s perfume with a woman’s scent’ and Chanel No. 5 was a pioneer, with a history marked by numerous firsts in the perfume industry.
With its varying notes that include jasmine, sandalwood, amber, aldehydes and ylang-ylang, Chanel No. 5 was the first perfume to combine multiple scents at a time when fragrances normally featured a single-flower scent. It was the first fragrance created using revolutionary alchemy techniques. And, of course, it changed the advertising world. Chanel No.5 became the first perfume to get advertising time during the Super Bowl and to have celebrities like Candice BergenNicole Kidman and even Brad Pitt endorse it. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City honored the perfume in 1959, and  Andy Warhol immortalized it in his art. The ‘No. 5′ stems from the sequence of fragrance formulas perfumer Ernest Beaux presented to Coco Chanel before she was enamored by the scent’s fifth version. The fashion icon also believed the number 5 brought good luck, and – in this case at least – it seems she was right.

10 Ridiculous Perfumes That Might Seduce You

Perfumes will always be popular – they’re a great way to make you smell nice. But sometimes people come up with ideas for perfume that are bat-shit insane. And then – making you wonder if they are constantly on mescaline – they follow through with it.

This list is dedicated to all those who had a bad idea and decided, sadly, that going through with it was the right course of action. They may have come up with the worst perfumes ever made – but they had a goal, and for all we know, they had a good time achieving it. Below, you will see perfumes that range from the bizarre to downright offensive.10
Fat Electrician
Fat-Electrician

The name for this perfume makes you wonder if the executives at Etat Libre d’Orange were sitting around at a board meeting, banging their heads against their desks to come up with new ideas. Perhaps they decided that the best way to figure it out would be to put a bunch of random objects on a wheel, spin it and then throw knives at it to decide the name and inspiration for their next perfume.

I’m not sure why creating a perfume named after the sort of person you expect to smell pretty much the opposite of good was a smart idea. But then again, anyone who would name a perfume “fat electrician” (bearing in mind that the goal is to sell said perfume) is probably not entirely sane anyway – so I’m going to go with complete lunacy as our explanation for this one.

9
Vulva Original
Vulva-Original

I’m not really sure we need to say anything about this one, since the name explains it in a nutshell. They try so hard to claim they are not really a perfume – but that’s because they think that “bottled essence of vagina” is more appealing. But this is a nonsensical product, which the designers are pushing on fellow perverted lunatics who can’t get the real thing.

The website claims that it can provide you with the essence of the real thing; all you need to do is splash a few drops on your skin to get that wonderful feeling of being seduced by a vagina. I think that the creators belong in a mental hospital.

8
Lady Gaga’s “Fame” Perfume
Lady-Gaga-Fame-Perfume

Lady Gaga is known for being shocking; it’s reached a point where the only thing she could possibly do to surprise someone would be to walk on stage with a normal dress, and sing a ballad about love while playing the piano. Her shtick, so to speak, is stuck – she needs to freshen up her act.

But her familiar wildness doesn’t make her new Fame perfume any less disgusting. Her perfume is reported to contain actual blood and semen – horrendously nightmarish on more levels then we can possibly count. The target market may well be vampires and serial killers.

7
Eau De Macbook Pro
Macbook Perfume

We all know someone who is so obsessed with Apple products that they cannot stop thinking about it for more than five minutes. Well, someone decided to take the obsession to an entirely new level. They decided that it wasn’t enough to just use your macbook, admire its beauty and brag about it to your friends; you needed to be able to smell like macbook at all times.

The designers of this perfume have incorporated such incredible smells as cardboard, ink, plastic and aluminum. While they might have gone a long way toward creating a perfume that smells like a computer, we cannot help but feel that this is entirely ill-advised – especially if one is single and searching. We love using our computers, but we obviously don’t use them for their smell. But it’s a great solution if you want to smell like you just rolled around in printer ink and plastic grocery bags at your local landfill.

6
Marijuana
Cannabis Perfume  The First Worldwide Medium Rgb

Many people – even those who don’t smoke weed – enjoy the smell of cannabis. It’s a very strong odor, but it’s obviously not an unpleasant one. It has a sweet, fragrant aroma that will make you feel great, and smell great to everyone around you. The designers figured that a marijuana-scented perfume would be a great way to get the experience without actually using Marijuana.

The biggest problem with this perfume is that in many parts of the world, Cannabis is still very much illegal. Now you can have all of the risks of someone reporting you for cannabis usage, without any of the good bits – the worst of both worlds if I’ve ever seen it.

5
His Money
Money-Perfume

We know that the capitalists in this country have gone a little over the edge of sanity when someone decides it’s a good idea to design and distribute a perfume that has no purpose, besides appealing to people’s sense of greed. It’s not expensive enough for the truly rich to find it suitably classy. This means that it’s marketed to young white collar hopefuls, who think that making it from junior deputy assistant to deputy assistant is really “making it”. Now he can smell like money through the whole process.

4
Play-Doh Perfume
Demeterplay

If you can’t make it back to kindergarten – whether by court order or circumstance – then this perfume is supposedly the next best thing.

The scent is supposed to take you back to another time and place; you willre-live your early years as a child! It seems that the creators of this perfume think that our fondest childhood memories were of using Play-Doh. They forget that the real joy of Play-Doh was throwing it at girls.

3
Funeral Home Perfume
Dsc04112

Demeter claims that they didn’t actually plan this particular name for their perfume. They claim that they were making a new fragrance; someone said that it smelled like a grandfather’s funeral, and that they should call it “Funeral Home”. According to Demeter, they loved the idea – and the rest was history.

I’m not sure I really believe that a professional fragrance company would name its new perfume on a whim – but we can be sure that you would struggle to find a less attractive name for a fragrance. If you want everyone to think you are dead – or at least wish you were – then pick up a bottle of Funeral Home today.

2
Burger King “Flame” Perfume
Meatperfume

Burger King has always been a fan of very bizarre viral marketing; they created the subservient chicken, after all. They also have had intensely creepy commercials that star the Burger King himself in suggestive poses in your own bed. However, they really took the disturbing cake with their latest marketing gimmick.

Burger King created a perfume that was designed specifically to sell in their fast food outlets – because everyone shops for perfume at burger joints. The perfume is supposed to smell like “seduction with a hint of flame-broiled meat”. While every perfume on the planet wants to smell seductive, the flame broiled meat part does not exactly sound tantalizing. Perhaps Burger King is trying to do too many things at once? I love burgers that smell like meat, but I’m not sure I want my significant other to smell like a Whopper.

1
Pizza Hut Perfume
Screen Shot 2013-01-05 At 12.05.16 Am-1Pizza Hut in Canada decided that they should branch out from mere pizza. After what we can only assume was a particularly booze-filled board meeting, it seems that marketing executives decided that on a perfume thatsmells like pizza.

During their testing phase, they were surprised that cheese does not make for a nice-smelling perfume – and apparently went through several rounds to get the right smell. Unfortunately for those of you who want to get your hands on the new perfume – advertised as having “top notes of freshly baked, hand tossed dough” – it only had a very limited run. I’m not sure why someone would want to smell like food – especially greasy, cheesy food – but who are we to judge?

10 UNUSUAL SUMMER FRAGRANCE CHOICES

A co-blogging adventure with Perfume Shrine.

When choosing perfume for summer most people tend to go for the light and citrusy. There's something about crisp scents in the eau de cologne style that seems refreshing, at least for the short time they actually last on skin. But no matter how appealing the idea of a "cooling" scent may seem, I find that perfumes that actually smell like a real summer in its truest and most real form are much more satisfying.

I was exploring the idea of an ultimate summer. It means something different to each one of us, but think for a moment about the summer after you graduated from high school. Even if you don't over-romanticize (and I won't. Some of the memories from that time in my life are sucky at best), it still had some magic. The last summer of youth, living on the verge of adulthood, traveling, trying to make the most of that time before everyone scatters in pursuit of an unknown future.

And there are the scents of times and places that actually smell like summer and go with the heat without trying to fight it. These are not fresh and clean perfumes. Many are dry and bitter, and all of them remind me in some way of moments from that long lost summer.

1. Rien by Etat Libre d'Orange. Burnt rubber. Smells like driving an old car (too fast) on a very hot day, the sun is merciless but the road is open.

2. Anat Fritz by Anat Fritz- Dry woods and herbs. Camping in the woods, smelling pines and a hint of coolness in the air.

3. L'Eau Trois- Diptyque. Hiking in hills covered with cistus and other aromatics. It hasn't rained in weeks and the branches are dry and scratchy, but the scent is exhilarating.

4. Lonestar Memories- Tauer Perfumes. A campfire under the night sky. We're hours away from the city and the stars are so bright you can touch them just above the smoke.

5. Eau du Fier- Annick Goutal. Another campfire, this time the whole gang is there and we're spending the night on the beach. Drinking sticky orange juice and trying to make aromatic tea over the fire. It's bitter but strangely good.

6. Dzing!- L'Artisan. An August night at the fair. You can smell the petting zoo, the caramel from some vendor's cart and the leather jacket the tall guy had in his car and let you borrow because suddenly there's chill in the air. Or maybe it's just you.

7. Bulgari Black- Getting a vanilla ice cream at the end of that night. It never tasted better.

8. DKNY Women (the 1999 original)- Early morning in the city, just after a rainy night. Your hair is a little wet, your clothes still smell clean and you are acutely aware of the scents wafting all over. Steam from laundry rooms, fruit stands just opening and the smell of damp cobblestones and concrete. You're happy to be alive.

9. Shalimar- Guerlain (vintage extrait, of course). You dress up for the night. There's some cleavage involved and you decide to go all out there. The summer is almost over, so it's tonight or never. There's danger in the night air and all around you.

10. Muscs Kublai Khan- Serge Lutens. Obviously, Shalimar has done the trick and this is the morning after.

Elena from Perfume Shrine has some other unusual ideas for scents you never thought to wear until after Labor Day.
